West Cork's Favourites
Activities for Families & Kids 2001
In May 2001, we asked our viewers to nominate their favourite Activities for Families & Kids.
Congratulations to Ann Dunne and Fearghal Beamish, the winners of our draw for free family bowling tickets at The Mardyke Entertainment
Complex in Cork City.
| Beach - West Cork's Best Natural Feature
Whether for swimming or just a nice walk, our beaches are a popular family spot. The kids love the water
and playing in the sand. You can't beat the beautiful scenery. Spend a day relaxing, have a nice walk
with the family dog or gallop with your favourite horse.
Six of West Cork's beaches have received the prestigious
Blue Flag, a European programme to promote water
quality and safety: Barleycove (Crookhaven), Garrylucas (Old Head of Kinsale), Inchydoney (Clonakilty), Owenahincha
(Rosscarbery), Tragumna and Warren (Rosscarbery). |
| Bowling
Take the family up to Cork City for a session of ten-pin bowling. Fun for the beginner or a great competition
for the more experienced. Have some refreshements and make it a great day out. Something for a rainy day!
See our Directory for Bowling (Ten-Pin). |
Country Walks
Across West Cork, along the coast and inland, there are miles and miles of scenic walks. You can head
out on your own or join an organised walk. Don't forget the picnic basket.

Fun and fitness for the whole family. They say the earlier you start the kids swimming the better.
Besides the beautiful beaches throughout West Cork, there is a public pool in Dunmanway (which is due for
major renovation soon) and many leisure centres with pools for leisurely swims, splashing about with the
kids or lessons for all ages.

While this equestrian centre does not provide riding lessons or pony trekking at this time, it hosts
many events for local and regional clubs in its large indoor arena. Each year they host a summer camp

Local groups sometimes use the indoor facilities for training in other sports (i.e. rugby and tug-of-war)!.
